Zmanda Cloud Backup 2.0.2.2 is the latest release of Zmanda Cloud Backup that adds supports for new platforms - Windows 7 (including Home edition) and WIndows 2008 server R2 release. It also contains critical bug fixes.

Upgrading from Zmanda Cloud Backup 1.0.2

  • Customers can upgrade to new release by running setup.exe that is part of the 2.0.2.x software zip file.
  • Customers must preserve the configuration data during upgrade process if they want configuration and backup images to be restored using 2.0.2.x software. The Backup set Backup What, Where and When configuration, Monitor and Reports information are preserved.
  • All backups created using ZCB 1.0.2 can be restored using ZCB 2.0.2.x software except for encrypted backups (see next point).
  • There are few important caveats:
    • All backup sets created using 1.0.2 software must be saved after upgrade to 2.0.2.x This step must be done before backup or restores can be performed using ZCB 2.0.2.x software.
    • ZCB 2.0.2.x uses different data encryption configuration (certificate based encryption). Customers who have configured data encryption in 1.0.2 will have to configure digital certificates for amandabackup user and have to provide the certificate name in the backup set (Backup>What). Otherwise, data encryption will not be performed after upgrade to 2.0.2.x
    • In Restore>What page in the UI, Top Directories View is not available for backup created using 1.x images. Users can use All Files view to restore selected files.
    • All backup schedules created in ZCB 1.0.2 should be modified to work in ZCB 2.0.2.x The location of scheduler.exe binary has moved from the Zmanda Internet Backup folder to the Zmanda Cloud Backup folder. Please update the 1.0.2 schedule entries in the Windows Task scheduler or delete the old ones and recreate them using ZCB 2.0.2.x

Upgrading from Zmanda Cloud Backup 2.0

Users with backup images encrypted using ZCB 2.0 will have to migrate their backup images before upgrading to ZCB 2.0.2.x The migration procedure is

  • Restore all encrypted (already backed up) archives , which will need to be backed up after upgrade. This is because we will be deleting the Zmanda key container.
  • Assign necessary permissions to 'amandabackup' user. Assign "Full Control" permissions to amandabackup user in following folders:
Windows XP and 2003 Server C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys

Vista, Windows 7 and 2008 Server
C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys
C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\
  • Execute command aspnet_regiis -pz "Zmanda ( Make sure no Zmanda key container exists by running again aspnet_regiis -pz "Zmanda").
  • Upgrade to ZCB 2.0.2.x (If you have already upgraded, skip this statement).
  • Perform encrypted backups and export Zmanda key container for disaster recovery. Please see Getting Started manual (Help > Getting Started) for details.

Installation/Upgrade procedure

Zmanda Cloud Backup will not install on machines running Amanda Windows Client or
Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) Windows client.

Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7

Microsoft requires users to backup all files and reformat the hard drive to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7.

If you are backing up all important files and application data using ZCB to the cloud, you can restore them easily to Windows 7 after the upgrade. You will need to do following:

  1. Install ZCB 2.0.2.x on the system that has Windows 7 installed.
  2. Use Tools > Restore Catalog, provide Windows XP machine hostname, backup set name(s) and location to restore the data to.
  3. You can restore all backups done from Windows XP machine. Please be careful restoring data to original location because folder structure of Windows 7 is different from Windows XP.

Changes

  1. Support for all Windows 7 edition filesystem and system state backup and recovery.
  2. Support for Windows 2008 server R2 filesystem and system state backup and recovery.
